Invitation from the General Chairman
Ralph G. Richardson

The Shreveport Geological Society is pleased to welcome you to the 59th Annual Joint Convention of the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies and the Gulf Coast Section of SEPM. You will be pleased that the meeting has resumed its usual format of a stand-alone convention. We invite you to come to Shreveport to investigate our theme, “A Fusion of Geology and Technology.”

You will see all of the usual things that are expected at our meetings but with a twist—there is an unusual amount of depth with each topic. The technical program this year is preceded by an all-day symposium on Sunday, September 27, which concentrates on the area-wide Haynesville Shale and other shale plays. A group of noted authorities will bring to you talks which will greatly expand your understanding of the local formation and concepts that can be applied to other shale formations. The technical sessions on Monday, September 28, and Tuesday, September 29, have been assembled by Technical Program Chairman Gary Hanson and arranged by David Hart. They are timely and will be of interest to the working geologist.

In addition to technical program, you can expand your knowledge base by attending your choice of several short courses or see geology in action on a field trip.

But coming to a convention is not just work and education. Becky Billlingsley has arranged for activities to keep the spouses busy and the hospitality room in the Hilton Hotel will be staffed by the ladies of the Shreveport Geological Society Auxiliary. Kevin Hill, our Entertainment Chairman, looks forward to seeing you at what promises to be an excellent Icebreaker on Sunday evening. He has also arranged an evening dinner party at one of Shreveport’s finest restaurants that you won’t soon forget.

Shreveport is a wonderful place to live and work and we are confident that you will enjoy your visit here, both professionally and socially. Have a safe trip home and plan to make all of the GCAGS meetings in future years.
